Pokrovsky Ensemble is well-known in many countries as a professional group who can present the Russian traditional music as good as modern and classical pieces. Its unique manner of singing is the main part of the special vocal school created in the Ensemble. After Dmitri Pokrovsky’s death in 1996 the artists were able to keep working and to preserve the Ensemble to continue his deal. From 1998 Ensemble is a creative workshop of Moscow Taganka Theatre. The main base of the Ensemble is situated on Small Scene of this theatre, where ensemble rehearses and regularly shows its concerts.
The repertoire of Ensemble is very wide - from the national songs which have been written down on numerous expeditions on various regions of Russia to compositions of Glinka, Stravinsky, Schedrin, Shnittke, etc. Pokrovsky Ensemble executing both folklore, and classical products, there were the first group of the musicians which have taken out the present national song on the well-known academic scenes of the Berlin, Cologne, Viennese and Tokyo Philharmonic societies, Carnegie-hall, Birmingham Symphony Hall, London Barbikan, etc.
Now modern composers V.Martynov, A.Raskatov, A.Batagov, V.Nikolaev, A.Viskov, I.Jusupova, M.Shmotova and others write music specially for Pokrovsky Ensemble . Thus each author's composition in collective interpretation becomes a part and traditional musical culture. The Ensemble which has recently noted the 35 anniversary, constantly co-operates with theatre and cinema, various creative collectives, conductors and executors of different directions.
